I have used homemade tuner clamps and old guitar strings for crack repair but got a particularly nasty side crack in and decided to order some extra clamps, wire, and tie blocks from StewMac.

I must say they work great. The wire is .014 and very strong, much better than guitar strings and the tie blocks hold very well. Wire is pricey but you pretty much get a lifetime supply. You can put a short piece in a pin vice and use it to make a tiny hole in a glued crack to put patches in difficult to reach areas.

I was impressed.

Oh, yeah. I built one of those way back in the day from some scrap wood and an old tuning machine. I think I was inspired by Don Teeter? Pretty sure it was before StewMac and Dan Erlewine teamed up. Very handy, indeed - especially on the right repair.
